Plaintain

Broadleaf Plantain (Plaintain major) is a very common weed throughout the United States and all over the world. There are several types of plaintain and all are edible. It’s an easy plant for new foragers to learn since there are no poisonous look-alikes.

Identification: Broad, heavily lined, green leaves. Smooth edges and no hair or teeth.

Flowers: Tiny, in a tall spike.

Seeds: Tiny, green.

Edibility:

High in Vitamins A, C, and K. You use it in soups, stews,

Seeds can be used as a seed or grain.

Medicinal Value:

Antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and astringent. Excellent for helping to heal wounds and relieving itchiness from bites, stings, and rashes.

Makes a great poutice (mash or chew it up and put right on the rash).

Salve, balm, lotion, lotion bar, or infused oil.

Seeds are known as psyllium ( and are used as a fiber supplement.
