Indian strawberry (also called Mock strawberry), Rosaceae Potentilla indica, also Rosaceae Duchesnea indica is a super fun plant that sometimes even seasoned foragers dismiss. The thing about this small berry is some years, it has very little taste. But when the spring is dry, the fruit is quite sweet. This year it’s been wet and the berry is juicy.
I still love it straight or on a salad and so do kids. If you’re out backpacking or try to spice up your salad at home, it’s a gorgeous, colorful addition.
The main difference between this and real wild strawberry is the 5-petaled flower for this one is yellow. Regular wild strawberry has white, 5-petaled flowers.
You can add the leaves to stews or soups to add vitamin C and fiber, even in the winter.
The leaves can be used to make a poultice to reduce swelling in order to treat a number of ailments: boils, abscesses, weeping eczema, ringworm, snake and insect bites and traumatic injuries.
